2023 was a great year for movies! I think we can safely say -- movies are back!

Gotta say, I haven’t seen many of the ones you have in your top 5, but Barbie is one of them that I was not a fan of. The only part that I liked was the last scene! I agree with you all about The Holdovers! Highly recommend that one! Happy New Year! May the year be filled with amazing movies that truly move us! ♥️🎥

Excellent lists from all four of you! But come on! Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny? In the words of the great John McEnroe “You cannot be serious!” Why not put The Flash on the list while you’re at it? Happy New Year and see you at the movies!

Yeah, Dial of Destiny is definitely a subjective pick for me. 😆 My big issue is that I don’t think there was a justifiable reason for the film to exist, but I think Mangold and others did their best with a movie Disney probably would have eventually made with or without them. I have a lot of other issues with the film, which largely enticed me to pour over it and the Indiana Jones franchise in search of its redeeming qualities, if any. I think it does two things well. 1) It builds upon and completes the arc of Indy’s character, especially in a more satisfying way than Crystal Skull, and 2) it leaves you wanting more Indiana Jones, which you can only find in the OG films, which I think is purposeful on Mangold’s part. That’s why it made my top five. It got me excited about the original Indiana Jones movies like when I saw them for the first time as a kid. Happy New Year!

Join us on the right side of history, JD! 😂 Dial of Destiny is imperfect, yes, but much more thoughtful and interesting than folks are giving it credit for. Time will be kinder to it than most legacy sequels—especially the Disney-era Star Wars movies. The action is more rudimentary but what makes the movie work is the emotional beats. Trim off twenty minutes and get rid of a few characters (Teddy and the CIA agent) and you’ve got a really good movie. Happy New Year to you and the whole Piro family!
